JLPT
Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) or 日本語能力試験 (nihongo nouryoku shiken) has five levels from N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced).

Kanken
Kanken (漢検) is the abbreviation of Nihon Kanji Nouryoku Kentei 日本漢字能力検定 (Japan Kanji Aptitude Test).
Most Japanese will study only up to Grade 2 (2,136 kanji) which is the compulsory Commonly Used Kanji (常用漢字 jouyou kanji) studied up to the age of 14. This is sufficient when applying for jobs. The Pre-1 and 1 are rarely attempted (around 2,000 examinees in a year) and the success rate has been very low (approx. 20% and 10% for the year 2016-17).
