    Kanken

Kanken (漢検) is the abbreviation of Nihon Kanji Nouryoku Kentei 日本字能力定 (Japan Kanji Aptitude Test).

Most Japanese will study only up to Grade 2 (2,136 kanji) which is the compulsory Commonly Used Kanji (常用漢字 jouyou kanji) studied up to the age of 14. This is sufficient when applying for jobs. The Pre-1 and 1 are rarely attempted (around 2,000 examinees in a year) and the success rate has been very low (approx. 20% and 10% for the year 2016-17).
